About the role
The Solid Waste Operator will support the Atlantic Undersea Test and Evaluation Center (AUTEC) mission on Andros Island, Bahamas. This position is responsible for managing solid waste and recycling operations, ensuring compliance with environmental, health and safety standards, and maintaining all related equipment.
Key responsibilities
- Maintain fitness for duty and remain free of alcohol or drugs while on the job.
- Complete daily task hazard assessments and required training.
- Inspect vehicles, equipment and personal protective equipment (PPE) before, during and after use.
- Wear, store and maintain PPE in accordance with safety procedures.
- Identify, report and correct environmental, health or safety hazards when authorized.
- Report all incidents and near‑misses to the Solid Waste & QRP Supervisor or EHS Manager.
- Operate roll‑on/roll‑off trucks, refuse trucks, recycling trucks, pick‑up trucks, forklifts, trash compactor, composter, drum and can crusher, and cardboard baler.
- Prepare solid waste and recycling materials for off‑site shipment, including required paperwork.
- Manage sign‑in/out of base personnel using the Solid Waste Compound and enforce authorized unloading areas.
- Prepare the base for hurricane readiness and assist with spill response as a member of the Facility Response Team.
- Support other sections of the EHS Department as directed and keep the Solid Waste yard organized for safety and sanitation.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Required profile
- 1‑3 years of experience in solid waste handling or a related field such as heavy equipment or construction.
- Valid Class B commercial driver’s license (CDL) obtained within the past year.
- Ability to operate manual‑transmission vehicles and hold a Bahamian driver’s license for trucks and forklifts.
- Physical ability to lift up to 50 lb and climb ladders or work on uneven surfaces.
- Compliance with project EHS requirements and ability to read, write and speak English.
- Basic math skills for load calculations and time documentation.
- Willingness to work Saturdays or Sundays as needed.
- Citizenship of the Bahamas.
