Head of Artificial Intelligence

About the role

The Ministry of Innovation and National Development (MIND) is seeking an accomplished Head of Artificial Intelligence to lead the development and responsible implementation of AI solutions across the Government of The Bahamas. This is a senior, hands-on technical leadership position for an experienced AI professional who designs and deploys practical solutions and builds sustainable internal AI capabilities, rather than only advising on AI strategy.

Key responsibilities

• Lead the Ministry's applied AI portfolio, identify high-impact opportunities and develop solutions that improve government operations and service delivery.
• Design, train, fine-tune, evaluate and deploy custom machine learning models, including large language models (LLMs), NLP and retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) solutions.
• Develop prototypes and pilots, move successful solutions into secure, scalable production systems and monitor their effectiveness.
• Establish and maintain data pipelines, model deployment environments, monitoring systems and MLOps practices.
• Ensure solutions meet standards for privacy, security, transparency, bias mitigation, human oversight and risk management.
• Build internal AI engineering capabilities, mentor technical teams and establish reusable AI tools, frameworks and development practices.
• Work with ministries, agencies and technical stakeholders to integrate AI into digital platforms and operational processes.

Required profile

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Mathematics, Engineering or a related quantitative discipline.
• At least seven years of professional experience in AI or machine learning engineering.
• Demonstrated hands-on experience building, training, fine-tuning and deploying custom ML models into production.
• Strong practical experience with LLMs, RAG, model evaluation and production integration.
• Experience with cloud-based AI infrastructure, data pipelines, model monitoring and MLOps.
• Understanding of responsible AI practices, including privacy, security, bias evaluation and human oversight.
• Preferred: advanced degree; experience delivering AI solutions in government, financial services, healthcare or regulated environments; experience with document processing, permitting, registries, case management or service automation; experience with limited or imperfect datasets; mentoring or team leadership experience; contributions to AI projects, open source or published technical work.
